Spencer grew up is Kapuskasing, Ontario, where he spent most of his time playing sports, breaking things, building things, and scheming with friends. Following graduation from university, he worked with the Ministry of Natural Resources in Northern Ontario and an environmental research group in Kingston, Ontario.
After losing interest in collecting soil samples and labelling ziplocs, Spencer returned to university to complete a degree in education. Since graduating he has taught in various locations, including: the Fort Albany First Nation in Northern Ontario, Queen's University in Kingston, ON, the Centre for International Exchange and Solidarity in San Salvador, El Salvador, and the Native Women's Association in Yellowknife, NWT.
