The Making of the Witness Blanket

Join us for a screening of Picking Up the Pieces: The Making of the Witness Blanket. The documentary film charts the journey of Indigenous master carver Carey Newman during the creation of the Witness Blanket.

The Witness Blanket is a large-scale art installation, inspired by a woven blanket, that includes hundreds of everyday items recovered from 77 communities across Canada where residential schools were located. The powerful work is a monument that recognizes the atrocities of the Indian Residential School era, honours the children and symbolizes ongoing reconciliation.

Instructors are invited to experience the film and explore ways to create opportunities and learning when the exhibition comes to the Nelson Museum Archives & Gallery in 2024.
