To support better outcomes inside the classroom and out, the Selkirk College Foundation is helping ensure students have access to proper nourishment when finances get tight.
The Selkirk Staff Student Emergency Fund gives those who work at the college an opportunity to make one-time or ongoing donations through a payroll deduction. The employee-driven fund supports students with groceries and other financial assistance in times of greatest need.
With the cost of groceries continually on the rise, students will have access to the food pantry service which is administered by the Selkirk College Students’ Union. To help bolster pantry supplies on the Castlegar Campus, Silver King Campus, Tenth Street Campus and Trail Campus, the Foundation has provided a one-time $6,000 gift to the students’ union made possible through the Selkirk Staff Student Emergency Fund.
“When students come to Selkirk College to pursue their educational goals, it takes commitment and sacrifice,” says Andrew Jupp, Manager of Advancement & Alumni Relations. “The cost of an education is significant and we would never want any individual to go with out the basics while they focus on their future. We are fortunate to have such amazing employees who realize that it can be a struggle and want to contribute to ensuring that the welfare of students in post-secondary remains a high priority.”
The Selkirk Staff Student Emergency Fund was established in 2009 and has been providing assistance to learners for more than a decade. Employees can sign up to contribute for as little as $5 per paycheque by contacting the Advancement Department.
The food pantry is available to all students in all programs at Selkirk College. Learners can either stop by the students’ union office on the various campuses or call 250.365.1303.
