In observance of Transgender Awareness Week on November 13–19 and the Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20, the transgender pride flag has been raised at the Castlegar and Silver King campuses.

This week is an opportunity, writes the advocacy organization GLAAD, “to bring attention to the trans community by educating the public about who transgender people are, sharing stories and experiences, and advancing advocacy around issues of prejudice, discrimination and violence that affect the transgender community.”

The flag speaks to Selkirk College’s dedication to creating an environment that celebrates diversity and a culture of inclusion for all.

“We are committed to supporting our 2SLGBTQIA+ students in every way possible,” says Healthy Campus Coordinator Katie Comrie. “Acknowledging the lived experience and myriad of obstacles that queer youth encounter daily and dedicating ourselves to continual learning and growth is a priority for Selkirk College. Creating an environment where all of our 2SLGBTQIA+ students can safely and confidently engage in their roles as learners, but also provide them with opportunities to be educators, is of great import for the institution.”

This week, join Social Service Worker students for an on-campus celebration, and explore events and resources in communities around the region and online.
