Our Selkirk College Saints name dates back to the very origins of Selkirk College. Now, it's time to examine our athletic identity - from our hockey team to our recreational offerings to students - and we want your to help guide us. Our name, our logo, our colours...
The history of Selkirk College athletics and recreation stretches back to when the college first opened its doors to students in 1966. The charter class of 458 students could participate in teams and clubs that included hockey, basketball, soccer, skiing, boxing, fencing and archery. It was in that first year of study that the name Saints was chosen for both female and male teams.
Over a Half Century Later
Currently, Selkirk College has one varsity team. The Selkirk College Saints men’s hockey team represents the region, over the last decade in the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League (BCIHL) where they won the provincial championship four years in a row (2013 - 2016).
Over the last 50-plus years, the tradition of giving students an opportunity to play varsity sport at a high level and providing all students the chance to maintain a healthy lifestyle through recreation, has been a constant. Moving forward, Selkirk College is looking at ways to enhance our overall athletics and recreation offerings so that all those involved get the most out of their experience.
To remain relevant and fresh we are also looking at our image - our colours and logo along with our name.
What Do You Think?
As Selkirk College continues to serve the region, we are asking those we serve to help us ensure what is being offered today fits with the expectations of students, staff, alumni, retirees and the greater community. Please take a moment to take part in the discussion on Thoughtexchange.
The college has contracted Rossland-based Thoughtexchange to help create an online engagement process that will ensure as many voices are incorporated into our Saints Identity Review as possible. Selkirk College previously used this innovative online discussion format to seek guidance in our Strategic Plan renewal process with great success.
