What Is a Traumatic Incident?

A traumatic incident is a sudden, unexpected event that causes emotional or psychological trauma for people who are directly or indirectly involved. It typically impacts a number of people.

A traumatic incident could be:

  • A major incident with multiple casualties.

  • A natural disaster or environmental threat.

Common Reactions

Not everyone reacts trauma in the same way. There can be a range of emotional, cognitive, psychological, social, behavioral or spiritual responses to a traumatic incident.

It’s normal to feel shock, helplessness, guilt or fear and to feel confused or disoriented. You might experience headaches or dizzy spells, insomnia or loss of appetite. It could become difficult to keep up with school or social commitments.
