An essential component of healthy lifestyles for the Selkirk College community, recreation facilities on the Castlegar Campus will undergo a major renovation starting in June.

Funded through Columbia Basin Trust’s partnership with regional post-secondary aimed at enhancing student life, the renovation project will result in a number of major improvements that will bring a modern touch to facilities that have been a vital part of the campus since the 1970s.

“Rest assured that we are working diligently to minimize any disruptions and complete the renovations as quickly as possible,” says Eric Ehman, the college’s associate project manager. “We’re excited about the improvements these renovations will bring to our gym facilities and are confident that facility users will love the results.”

This renovation project will bring a host of enhancements to the facility, including a new floor, modern bleachers, a modern divider curtain, and a refresh of the bouldering cave. These changes are part of the ongoing commitment to provide students, staff and community members with the best possible recreation environment.

Renovation Overview

Gym Floor: Contractors will be sanding down the gym floor to remove any imperfections, scratches or uneven areas. This process will create a smooth and level surface that is safe and comfortable for all types of activities.

Line Painting: Once the sanding is complete, the project will proceed with line painting to reapply the markings and lines on the gym floor. This includes markings for basketball, volleyball, badminton and other sports.

New Bleachers: The college is excited to introduce new upgraded bleachers. These new bleachers will be an updated version of the current setup with more options for accessibility.

Divider Curtain: A modern divider curtain will be installed to enhance the functionality of our gym space. This curtain will allow the Athletics & Recreation Department team to create separate areas for different activities, providing more flexibility and versatility for members and guests.

Refreshed Bouldering Cave: The bouldering cave will receive a refresh, with updated climbing routes, improved safety features and a revamped layout to challenge and inspire climbers of all skill levels.

Facility Access During the Renovation

During the renovation period, the weight room and squash court will remain open, and at times there may be limited access to the change rooms. The college apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate the patience and understanding of users as the work to improve facilities takes place.
