Snowy season is here, and it’s important to be prepared on the roads to keep yourself and others safe.

When you get behind the wheel this winter, make sure you're prepared for winter driving, which means adapting to changing conditions and ensuring your vehicle is winter-ready.

Winter Driving Tips

  • Plan: Check current road and weather conditions on DriveBC.
  • Use proper winter tires: Install four matching tires with the 3-peaked mountain/snowflake symbol.
  • Schedule a maintenance check: Give your vehicle a pre-season maintenance check-up.
  • Carry an emergency kit: Include essentials such as blankets, a flashlight, snacks, water and a shovel.
  • Slow down: Speed limits are the maximum speed under ideal driving conditions. Reduce your speed below the speed limit and drive with extra care.
  • Leave extra space: Maintain at least four seconds of distance between your vehicle and the one in front.

Keep Campuses Safe

Our campuses are busy places. To ensure the safety of students, employees and visitors, all drivers must be especially mindful of speed limits and pedestrian activity.

Areas such as parking lots, the childcare center, student housing and recreation facilities are particularly active. People may appear unexpectedly between vehicles or around corners, and winter weather, along with shorter daylight hours, can further reduce visibility. Slowing down and staying alert can make all the difference.

Please remember:

  • Follow all posted speed limits: They're set with safety in mind.
  • Drive slowly: Especially in parking lots and around buildings with heavy foot traffic.
  • Stay alert and be prepared to stop: Reduced visibility and high foot traffic can create unexpected situations.
  • Eliminate distractions: Keep your focus on the road and your surroundings.

By taking a few extra moments to drive safely, you help protect everyone who learns, works, and visits here. Thank you for doing your part to keep our campus safe.
