This February, more than 100 donors, students, and members of the college community gathered for Selkirk College Foundation’s annual Donor Tea to celebrate the impact of community support on student success.
Since last April, more than 500 students have collectively received over $589,000 in bursaries and scholarships, made possible through the generosity of donors committed to helping learners pursue their goals.
“Receiving this bursary has made a huge difference for me,” says Avery Watkins, a student in the Hairstylist Program and the recipient of the Ti Hendershot Hairstylist Legacy Bursary. “Like many other students, I've worked hard, used my savings and taken out student loans to attend school… This bursary has significantly lifted a weight off my shoulders and has allowed me to feel more comfortable when it comes to everyday expenses like rent and groceries. It has also allowed me to feel calmer and more focused on my education instead of worrying about finances.”
The foundation is dedicated to supporting equitable and accessible post-secondary education across the region. Scholarships and bursaries help remove barriers to an education at Selkirk College, supporting students to gain practical, real-world experience that prepares them to adapt and thrive in a changing world.
“Since being a student here, I have loved the learning environment and the support I feel from my teachers and classmates every day. It’s been super valuable to work with real clients in our salon each week and see the techniques we’re learning come to life,” says Watkins.
Behind every award is a donor who believes in the power of education and the potential of students. The foundation is grateful for a strong community of supporters that continues to invest in learners, helping turn ambition into achievement.
“Scholarships and bursaries reflect what a community can achieve together. They inspire excellence, build confidence and reduce barriers that can stand in the way of education,” says Maggie Keczan, director of communications and public engagement. “Ultimately, they strengthen our region—because when students thrive, our whole community thrives.”
