Collaborative origins
RPM was created through collaboration and consultation with health organizations, medical professionals and Selkirk College faculty. The program aims to increase the number of rural and Indigenous students pursuing careers in professional health.
Comprehensive curriculum
The program provides a rigorous academic foundation in life sciences and is designed as a pathway to medicine, pharmacy, optometry, dentistry, physical therapy, midwifery, veterinary medicine, naturopathy, public health, biomedical research and more.
Supportive community
The cohort model in RPM means students are a part of a team, progressing through their courses as a group and forming relationships with their peers that facilitate support and success. Together with their cohort, RPM students develop resilience and confidence along their pathway into rural health care.
Unique training
RPM students have learning opportunities that are not available in other undergraduate programs. Events include non-academic certificate courses; cultural safety and humility training; equity, diversity and inclusion training; team building and leadership training; and Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) preparation.
Mentoring
Connections with local non-profit organizations, presentations from local health care providers and mentorship from medical school students are all part of RPM. Along with opportunities for leadership and mentoring, students can apply for work study positions.
Student success
In contrast to large universities where courses can have hundreds of students, RPM classes are small, allowing for a personalized learning environment that fosters student success. RPM students have check-ins with faculty members to discuss their experiences in the program and their plans for a career in rural health.
