Help Create a Space for Native Plants

Join us as we work to restore the Spirit Garden, the outdoor space of the Gathering Place. We will be removing old landscaping (mulch and fabric) and replacing it with new landscaping fabric and mulch. We will also be weeding, cleaning the space and filling the new planter boxes.

Please bring your own work gloves, weather appropriate clothing and a lunch. Snacks and refreshments will be provided.

This event is open to employees, students and their families.

About the Project

Guided by a team of Elders, the Spirit Garden revitalization project is a demonstration of maintaining ecosystem integrity in a heavily modified space while increasing access to cultural materials and practice. The project involves the management of poison ivy and overgrown trees, transplanting select foods and medicines into planter boxes, planting additional native plants including foods and medicines, and redoing the landscaping.

The Spirit Garden will be a space for education, where employees, students and community members can learn about some native plants and their traditional uses, as well as for cultural connection, where Indigenous Services can arrange opportunities for harvesting activities for Elders and others.
