Selkirk College is launching a new micro-credential designed to help licensed practical nurses (LPNs) confidently transition into working in acute care settings.

Beginning in September 2026, the fully online LPN Transition to Acute Care Micro-Credential is open to LPNs across British Columbia who hold an active registration with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). Over 16 weeks, participants will strengthen their clinical decision-making, patient safety practices, communication and documentation skills while building knowledge in key areas of acute care nursing.

“We know practicing LPNs bring valuable experience to patient care, and this micro-credential is designed to help them build on that foundation with confidence,” says Tammie Clarke, dean of the School of Health and Human Services. “Whether you're looking to grow your career or transition into acute care, this flexible program gives you the skills and support to take that next step.”

A Flexible, Self-Paced Format

This micro-credential is designed for nurses working in long-term care, community health, home health and rural practice settings, as well as LPNs who are new to acute care. Delivered through a flexible, self-paced format, it enables nurses to build acute care competencies while continuing to work in their current roles. The micro-credential is eligible for funding through the BC Nurses’ Union’s Debra McPherson Member Education Bursary.
