Leading the Ceremony: Sturgeon Scale Paddle
The ceremony is led by a Sturgeon Scale Paddle made by artist and scholar Shawn Brigman, PhD. Dr. Brigman is an enrolled member of the Spokane Tribe and a descendant of the Columbia Plateau First Nations: snʕáyckst (Sinixt), sənpʕʷilx (San Poil) and Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc (Shuswap).
Using materials from the land, the artist has beautifully captured the relationship between people, the land, and the rivers, lakes and mountains of the traditional territories on which Selkirk College is so honoured to operate. The seven sturgeon scales inscribed on the paddle signify the seven life teachings of humility, courage, honesty, wisdom, truth, respect and love.
