I am passionate about teaching History because I believe that, with an understanding of the past, students can change the world.
We have a wide-ranging History program that takes students around the world and into their own back yard. We also work hard to help students build their reading, research, and writing skills which will enable them to succeed in upper-level university courses and in their working lives. Even more exciting is the way that University Arts and Sciences faculty work closely together so that students can make connections across several academic disciplines. It is always a great moment in the classroom when students see their studies as part of a broader whole.
I have taught History at Selkirk College since 2000. Before that I taught at several colleges and at UBC in the lower mainland. My PhD is in Canadian History, but I have also thoroughly enjoyed being able to teach a wide variety of courses at Selkirk College including the History of Western Society, Latin America, the First Nations of Canada, British Columbia and the West Kootenay.
I have published articles and reviews in Labour/Le travail, BC Studies, and Newfoundland Studies. I am currently working on a people’s history of the West Kootenay, which is inspired by many discussions and work by my students and colleagues.
