It’s Emergency Preparedness Week. This national event is a great time to familiarize yourself with what to do in different types of emergencies and make sure you are ready to react quickly to protect yourself, your family and your community.

This year’s theme is: Know your risks. Be prepared. For the Selkirk College community—with campuses and learning centres in different regions—the risks can vary, and it’s important to be aware of the particular actions you can take to stay safe.

“Emergency preparedness has become increasingly important as we have been experiencing more wildfires, flooding and landslides,” says Health & Safety Advisor Laura Neigel. “It is essential to have a go-bag readily available, emergency contacts outside of your community and familiarity with local emergency response plans. It is imperative to be prepared and ready to evacuate at a moment's notice. Taking simple steps to prepare for emergencies can make all the difference in staying safe, whether you are at work or home.”
